History...
Who
we are, what we do, why we're here!
PopMusic.com
was founded in December, 1995, by me.
This
was long before search engines really worked all
that well - so, millions upon millions of people
began typing "PopMusic.com"
in to their browsers to see what would
appear.
Actually,
to this day, 4 million new people a year do that,
making PopMusic.com.
one of the top 500 websites in the
world!
Before
there was anything there - not even a blank page -
millions of people were typing PopMusic.com
to see what would come up - The first time we
checked to see who was coming, we traced the ip
number back, and it was someone at the Moscow Stock
Exchange!
Anyway,
at first I put up a very
simple page,
with my own music - and, doing that, my song
Falling Out of Time became the first gold, and then
the first platinum song on the internet, with,
today, over 17 Million (!) downloads
and streams.
(and counting!)
There
were several other versions of the site along the
way, sometimes called ShareMusic.com, other times,
PopMusic.com
-
All
this led to me writing and producing all the music
for the largest theme park in the middle east! - An
odd thing to end up doing, but it was very cool -
that's a story in itself I'll tell some
day!
Eventually,
PopMusic.com
morphed into what many of you still remember - the
coolest music site on the internet - at a time when
Amazon only offered a few tracks to preview an
album, on PopMusic.com
you could listen to every song on every CD ever
made, free, in stereo! It rocked!
Charts,
news, a 24/7 live DJ spinning records - it was a
party that never stopped.
Then,
two things happened - I got into Oxford University,
and the dot com bubble burst. When I started at
Oxford, I had 2.8 million dollars - not,
unfortunately, in the bank! But in shares/stocks.
But December of that year, or early the next (the
pain, the pain!) I had just enough to see me
through my course - I actually had to do a course
that lasted one fewer years than I'd planned, cuz
that was all the money I had (don't you think
"because" is antiquated - "cuz" is so much more
efficient - I bother to mention this because (!)
just because I've been to Oxford, often when people
write me they will include parenthetical comments
like - "should that be who or whom?" - assuming I
should know. To be honest, I don't. But I am, here
and now, jumping on my own bandwagon to promote
"cuz". For whom it may concern (should that be who
or whom?!?)
Anyway...
So,
the site, PopMusic.com
, lay pretty fallow for a while.
Now,
May 17th 2008,
it's time to get the site pumping again. With a
list of over 7 million devoted fans, and a reach
the entire globe, PopMusic.com is fast becoming the
dominant center of music in the known
universe!

What
is the goal of PopMusic.com? To separate what sucks
from what doesn't.
How
do we do that? Through a complicated algorithm,
created by Oxford University scientists, which take
into account media-metrix measurements, and couple
that with a psychographic tabulation of the typical
music lover, who is exposed to each new song 32
times in succession, whilst connected to a complex
brain-scanning device?!?
No
- we believe very strongly in serendipity - the
best music somehow appears. Sometimes it's on the
radio - sometimes it's recommended by friends -
sometimes, when drunk, one bumps into record
producers, who accost one on the street, screaming
that they know you - and it turns out, they produce
the most popular music in the world (this actually
happened once, and popular music coming after the
accosting, but confirming that the creators of
PopMusic.com have what it takes to find and
discover the best - the very best - music in the
world.
Every
week, there are a hundred songs alone in some music
charts [LINK]. Yet, every year, how many
songs do you even remember? How many do you even
care about?!?
The
truth is, most music is made by people who want
Mercedes, or want sex, or want a thousand things
from music other than to blow your mind.
There
are some exceptions, and PopMusic.com is dedicated
to finding them. They can be found, at times, right
at the top of the charts - music we're all familiar
with can be groundbreaking and
mind-blowing.
Sometimes,
though, it's further afield. But, wherever it is,
PopMusic.com is determined to find it, and bring it
to you...
