Q. Why is Austin called "The President of Pop"? Before he'd even started high school, he saved up $75 from summer jobs, and bought PopMusic.com Millions and millions of people, since then, have thought - "Hmm...what would happen if I typed 'PopMusic.com' into my web browser." Maybe you? As he is the most prominent member of the Washington family (from having been on TV representing George Washington since he was in elementary school (!)), it seemed to someone, one day, that he was, indeed, the President of Pop. The name stuck. Q I love you. What should I do about it? I love you, too. Q Why is the sky blue? It isn't. It only looks that way from a distance. Q How do you write songs? The first few I wrote with my friends. Then I read a book about The Beatles (Hunter Davies' authorised biography), and it said their favourite songs (Lennon/McCartney, who wrote most of the good Beatle's songs) often came to them in dreams. So, for a while, I'd wait until I woke up in the morning with one running through my head. Sometimes, walking down the street. Wherever. (A daydream, I guess, in those cases!) Now, though, sometimes I just feel overwhelmed with some kind of feeling. Often, I'll take out my mobile phone, and sing it into the built-in recorder. Once, I was without any recorder or music instrument for a long time. I wrote 88 songs in 88 days, and had to remember all of the music in my head. I wrote the lyrics down, though. And I made some notations. I remembered almost all of them. Probably the bits I forgot sucked, anyway! It used to be called "inspiration", or being...um, in touch with the muses, or something. It's cool, but not nearly as much fun as hanging out with my friends!!! Or being in love...but, I'd put it at a distant third... Q How do you record your songs? I find that if I'm kind of inspired, in the right frame of mind, it just happens. It's not what you do, it's how you feel. Once, for example, I played an old classical guitar that happened to be lying around with a pen, and used a bottle of water, too, for an instrument. At a time when I was emotional, and needed to record something (I missed my friends, and wrote this really nice song that I'll release some day). The feeling came across. Everyone I played it to said so. It's, like, one of their favourite songs. It's not WHAT you do. It's why/how. I heard an interview with some famous pop star once, whose music, though catchy, always seemed fraudlent to me somehow - fake. It was good, but fake. He said something like "I can do all sorts of things with my voice." Exactly. Could John Lennon? No, but he felt stuff. And that always comes across, and cannot be faked. Q You take this awfully seriously. It's just pop music, y'know! Yeah, I know, sorry. My bad. (just heard "the duck is gone" from the end of Love Strikes Back (my song called that). Ha ha - I even take that song seriously...what can I say! ;) Q Do you have a home page? Sort of - workin' on it. Here! :D Q How can I keep in touch? I'd be pretty sincerely pleased if you did! It always makes me happy when people do. Here (and thanks!) :D
