What is PopMusic.com? PopMusic.com has been various things since I registered the name, before I started high school! Once, it was run by this huge Canadian company, who never gave me the money they were supposed to - but it was kind of cool - you could, famously, hear every song on every CD ever made, free, in stereo. It was, actually, very cool. Ah, those were the days. Today, it's two things. One, you can check out my music, about which people have said (and I paraphrase, from memory), "you're not really horrible". (Some people have said even nicer things than that, to be honest - ) hear more of Austin's music here The OTHER thing it is - and I just started this a few days ago as I write this - is a place for interesting people interested in interesting music and interested in making that music more popular in the rest of the world. As, y'know, pop music means popular music! Only very very recently has "pop music" come to mean really bad music. The Beatles were pop music. So was Jimi Hendrix. And in Korea...and Japan...and...Estonia? All these places. I'm not sure. I want to learn about it...(as just examples...I mean, like, everywhere!) (There's also ShareMusic.com, btw...) I know about Italian pop music, a bit. From my own experiences. But I want to hear more... All music that wasn't classical music, or Jazz music, was, basically, pop music, until modern times. Because it's my site, I get to decide what goes on here. And I say this - if you are some minimally talented person trying to become a pop star - if you would even consider being on pop idol or American Idol or something - I love you . Leave. (Or stay - and try to see that music really isn't best when it's about the vanity of, um...y'know...) If, however, you want to share with the world the music you find cool, please do so, here. Louis Armstrong is fine. Whatever. It doesn't have to be new. I would be happy if only seven people ever signed up for this thing. As long as they cared about music, and were willing to...y'know... Honest. |

Hi, this is Austin. Can you do me a favour, please? First, though, in case you're interested, this is me (it's a video about my other music website, ShareMusic.com)
The favour is this: I just put up this (new version) of PopMusic.com this morning (as I write this...) Every day, 700 or 800 people randomly come to PopMusic.com - People just think, "Hmm...PopMusic.com - what could that be?" Do you realise how much money someone would pay for that (once got offered...a LOT of money for PopMusic.com - well, it happens all the time, actually...) But I have no idea who you are. Sometimes I get messages like this (something like this - it would be rude to quote a private email exactly, anyway!) "I follow everything you do and love all of your music" Someone said something like that to me in an email a few weeks ago... I find that a huge compliment, especially as it's from a girl (!) ;D, but also it's so cool because she was half way around the world! I started ShareMusic a few weeks ago (another amazingly cool music name!) thinking it would be some great site about people...um...sharing music! And it is, in part. It's just a month old (as I write this) but so many people there seem to be - not to be impolite - but, wannabe pop stars. What I want, here, is for all the people who come here looking for info about pop music, to tell me - and the world! - what you like, wherever you are. On ShareMusic, maybe 10 or 20 people join a day. I'd be happy here if, say, 10 or 20 people, IN TOTAL, ever joined. Honest. Just so long as you are from some interesting place (even the US can be interesting, so...).... rephrase: Just so long as you are interesting, interested in music, and want to share it with the world. I love, like, hearing music from - y'know, Indonesia, or Korea (I don't know if North Korea even has much internet....?) Vanuatu. Balboa (is there such a place, or is that just a tree?) I keep seeing people sign up for the mailing list from Estonia. I don't know why, but I'm fascinated by that. What do you listen to in Estonia? YES, I'm no fool, I know much music is international (that is, the world knows Madonna, Britney, etc.) But not all. I once saw the coolest - THE coolest - thing from Georgia.
Anyway... I LOVE Italian pop songs. I like all sorts of music - but don't know it all. I'll put up what I know, but PLEASE - just to make a cool site - What is YOUR most popular music? Because that's what "pop music" is supposed to mean, y'know? Popular music. What is yours? Please DO NOT sign up if you're just going to promote your own music. Please. Yes, I put up my music here, but only because lots of people already like it (even though it's not on the radio these days - yet) And, um, it IS my website! So, thank you very much...I'd really genuinely appreciate it. I hate all the pushy, selfish, stupid people on the internet. I HATE YouTube, and everything it stands for (stupid people doing stupid things - stupidest thing/person wins) (For example, this 30 million viewed outrage!)
That's amusing. But PopMusic.com must, I hope, be about genuine pop music. Music that is popular with you - because it touches you, moves you, thrills you, delights you, edifies you, helps you chill out, pumps you up, excites you - in whatever way! Don't sign up for any other reason, please. Thank you, Sincerely, Austin STILL wanna join? Honestly, don't, unless you're really into it! Hi, this is Austin When I was a kid, I registered PopMusic.com - and freaked out, because when it was just a blank page - black, empty, nothing - people from the Moscow stock exchange, and from Norway, and....I dunno, the South Pole, probably - people from all over the world thought - "what would happen if I typed PopMusic.com into my web browser?" Around 700 people a day. I put up a blank page - no image, no photo, no name - just a song. And got thousands of responses. Some girl said I saved her life. A woman from Jive Records, Britney Spear's label, wanted to sign me. Sight unseen. No name, no photo. Just my music. (It was the song Falling Out of Time that most people loved....) So what? I blew Jive Records off, and went to university, instead - they had said they wanted to develop "baby bands", and, for one, I thought that was insulting. I wasn't arrogant - I just thought - "baby band" But I'm Austin! ;) Maybe my pride got in the way of my being...um...the next Britney Spears!? ;) Then again, I got to do all this, which was pretty cool, too! Anyway, I now, a few years later, have friends all around the world. And, for ages, I've been sending them songs. And they write me back. And still say things like...oh, I'll put some quotes up here later - I'm lying in bed as I write this! Too much trouble... But, the thing is, this. There are SO many people that I become friends with, when I meet them. This just happened tonight. Again. Actually, I also met a friend of The Beatles, at a party, just a few hours ago. Small world. Anyway, sometimes I find it weird to think there are billions of people - billions - I will never meet, or know, that I might be best friends with. And, though I don't believe it's possible to become friends over the internet - I don't personally believe in that - I'd still like to know more and more people to give my music to. Because people love it (one girl said it saved her life - I'll never forget that!) It's free. And if you want, it's for charity! Also, if enough people join this thing, maybe record companies will notice (again!), and my music will reach a wider audience. So, you're kind of helping - not me, but the music (it's also easier to make when you know there are lots of people listening.) No One is Where They AreI just got a new computer, and realised that by pushing a button, I was suddenly no longer in my room, but floating in the clouds. Maybe you've had a new computer longer than me, and that doesn't surprise you - but I was totally blown away! I had no idea a computer could do that, just by pushing a button. Hmmm.... Seeing that image reminded me of something I'd thought earlier in the evening...so I grabbed my mobile, and saw that I'd written a text to myself..."No one is where they are"....Walking back from the gym, some girl on her phone was walking nearby...me on mine, she on hers...next to each other, yet far away...her talking to her friends, me to mine - yet right next to each other. It's kind of weird, if you step back to notice. I saw Cinema Paridiso the other day - the entire movie - the main character's entire life, after childhood - would be utterly different if they'd had mobiles - Casablanca - same thing...those movies are based on people missing each other at train stations, or whatever...missing people when they are supposed to meet - in Cinema Paradiso, the guy's whole life was changed because he'd missed seeing his gf, and she him, one day...and they didn't see each other again for years... Today, an SMS: "Where are you? I'm here..." Maybe they'd have been far apart, but they'd still have been near. The opposite of me and that girl, walking back from the gym...next to each other, yet far apart... Hmmm... I saw that image, of me in my room, yet floating in the clouds ...There I was, flying through the clouds,...making a video to show my friends around the world my new songs...In my bedroom, in the clouds, with my friends, around the world - it reminded me of walking next to that girl...there, and not there... No one's where they are anymore... they're in the grocery store in New York, looking at melons, talking to their friend in Japan...barely cognizant of the melon they're abstractly touching...yet rapturously engaged in a heart-felt discussion with their friend, on the opposite side of the world...their voice, and emotions, carried by satellite, around the earth, quick as a heart-beat... I hope you guys - wherever you are - will float with me in the clouds, as you listen to the 8 songs on my new, yet "classic" EP Fly Like a Bird, one song a year since before high school...kind of "best of" of my songs no one's ever heard before...some I secretly love, but would be embarrassed to admit - only my best friends, and not even all my best friends, have heard some- some, my friends adore - some, maybe just you and me (!)...one, my grandfather almost got sick he hated it so much (!)...The 8 song Fly Like a Bird EP is available exclusively at ShareMusic.com/fly - 50% of all proceeds directly to charity!
